The purpose of the penny has drastically changed over the years from a purchasing tool, to an expensive and useless piece of currency. It has been proven to cost more to make the penny than it's actually worth, yet will still make millions of them a year.
Other countries such as Australia and New Zealand have gotten rid of the penny with no ill effects on the economy or buying power of individuals.
The penny not only costs more to make, but it cost people time to deliver change when using cash. If we rounded the currency down or up to the nearest $.5 ($.43 would become $.45) delivering change would be faster and more efficient, not to mention more pleasant since we wouldn't have all that change in our pockets.
Let's get rid of the penny and make some real change.
