Copyright law is way to strict. Copyright for a work should not last longer then the author is alive. Under are current copyright law it is illegal to write "fan fiction" based on a movie that is copyrighted unless you have permission to do so. It is also a violation of law to edit a book and write notes in a book you bought if the law is interpreted literally. It is considerd a derivative work. I don't think editing a book you bought should be illegal. There is no need need for strict copyright law. The copyright law in 1790 was not so strict. I would rather have copyright law only include giving away exact copies and reproductions of a work to the public. Under our current law many people are copyright infringers.
