Get rid of tax obligations on student loan discharged due to disability

Created by D.M. on December 10, 2015

People who qualify for student loan forgiveness due to disability are faced with one of two insurmountable hurdles:

Option 1 is constantly applying for unemployment deferrals, which rack up more interest and more debt.

Option 2 is to apply for student loan forgiveness which makes the total amount forgiven act like income and is taxed as such.

People who qualify for this discharge are uniformly poor. Unless the loan amounts are small, this is a crushing debt that hardly anyone in this situation can afford.

Racking up debt until the day you die or owe more money than the person makes in a year to the IRS than you can afford is a cruel and untenable solution.

Please remove the tax burden on discharged student debt due to a disability making the borrower unemployable.
