CITES-Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species March 3-15, 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The CITES treaty attempts to protect species against over-exploitation through international trade. But it's not working. Poachers still work illegally & some exploit legal loopholes that must be closed: i.e. Appendix I vs. II listings of populations in different countries which allows for laundering of kills. Increase penalties dramatically to be REAL deterrents. (ie a $2K fine means nothing when the horn is worth $300K !) And arm the guards w/ hi-tech!
Do not take any species off the lists. DON'T ALLOW the sale of ivory stockpiles, which just fuel the market & confuses enforcement.
Take action! We can't wait for CITES in 2016! At this rate, all elephants & rhinos will be GONE.
