The United States is on of a very small list of countries that does not mandate maternity leave. The only laws concerning new parents is the Family and Medical Leave Act. This Act was created over 20 years ago and was suppose to be stepping stone. This only offers workers 12 weeks of time off before you could loose your job.
The US needs to be up to date with the rest of the world and understand the importance of child development and the importance of family. A first step doesn't need to be drastic, like Swedens laws giving up to 480 days paid time off per child, but something simple like Mexico's 84 days 100% paid leave. Even like Saudi Arabia which pays new moms 50% of their pay for 70 days. Or Australia which gives the minumum wage for 126 days.
