give 50-50 joint legal and physical custody of any newborn to both parents when both parents sign the birth certificate

Created by B.P. on October 09, 2011

Under current law, when a child is born to unwed parents, the MOTHER is granted SOLE legal and physical custody of that child. Even if the FATHER signs the birth certificate, he has NO RIGHTS to custody or visitation. This seems to be gender-based discrimination.

It is not fair that a FATHER should have to pay thousands of dollars in attorney's fees and court costs just to have access to HIS child, while the MOTHER automatically has 100% control. In many instances, the mother makes it so difficult for the fathers to see their children to the point where MANY children suffer and end up without their male role-model. Too many custodial parents use their child as a pawn. Look at juvenile crime statistics. It takes 2 parents to produce a child-it is only fair they have equal rights.
