Currently, too many Americans are unemployed or underemployed. We can all agree that job creation is positive, but there is not enough focus on the quality of the few jobs that are available. Part-time work is better than no work at all, but at minimum wage, it is nowhere near self-sustaining. Further, part-time status often comes without sick pay, health benefits, or set hours. If businesses aren't giving workers sufficient hours and benefits to be even marginally financially stable, then what good are the jobs they create?
Perhaps we should begin to reward companies who guarantee full-time jobs that actually make a living. Could we perhaps lower the payroll tax for companies like this? Or can we begin to recognize the difficulties of needing 2 part-time jobs but having benefits at none?
