Many public schools require students to take physical education classes until at least their sophomore year of high school. These gym classes are often a waste of student's time as they focus on physical fitness testing rather than training. Physical education classes are beneficial to those who otherwise would not exercise on their own; however generic gym classes should not be a student's only option. Many students participate in seasonal sports or dance teams providing them with more physical exercise than one would receive during an hour of gym class. Students that play seasonal sports or dance regularly should be able to opt out of required physical education classes and take courses that can better benefit their education.
