About every five years, the minimum wage gets hiked up by about 50% and everybody gets upset. The people who employ minimum wage workers complain that they won't be able to afford the increased costs and may have to lay off workers, and that gets the minimum wage workers scared that they're going to lose their jobs. There's a really sensible solution to this that nobody in politics seems to be addressing. The minimum wage should increase gradually. We should have a 7% increase in the minimum wage each year for five years, and then the minimum wage should increase annually at the same rate as the salaries offederal employees. That way, there won't be a need for drastic increases and people will earn a more reasonable salary for their work.
