Pakistan just announced that it will deport Sharbat Gulla, the Afghani girl, now woman and mother of four, who graced the iconic June 1985 cover of National Geographic. Her plight is representative of the plight faced by approximately 1.5 million Afghani refugees currently living in Pakistan, who face systemic persecution at the hands of Pakistani authorities. Granting Sharbat and her children asylum in the United States is the just outcome for a woman who became the face of a region plagued by conflict and sold millions of copies of National Geographic , all to wind up a refugee in Pakistan. It would also draw international focus on Pakistan's cruel treatment of its Afghani refugees and set an example globally for the acceptance of refugees who pay the highest price during times of war.
