Wassamassaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians are seeking sovereignty and recognition from the U.S. Government.
The Wassamassaw tribe was done a great injustice by being forced to assimilate into the white or black cultures of South Carolina.
This injustice was corrected by formal recognition of tribal status by South Carolina.
However, due to 200 years of assimilation parts of the Wassamassaw culture has been lost and that loss due to no fault of the tribe is a barrier to Federal recognition as a Native American tribe.
This can be corrected with the White House support and guidance of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to correct an injustice to the tribe and allow the dignity of the Wassamassaw Tribe be restored.
