The prohibition of marijuana has proved to be one of the most costly mistakes this country has ever made. A billion dollars per year is spent on housing our marijuana "offenders" which make up an eighth of all those incarcerated for drug offenses. Furthermore, enforcement of marijuana laws is not consistent, and minorities bear the brunt of this failed policy. Incarceration of these offenders does not make us safer, it only serves to destroy lives, suppress minorities and cost us money we cannot afford to spend.
I implore you, Mr. President, stop the madness, stop the racism and stop flushing billions of the taxpayers' dollars down the toilet each year. Return these people who have not hurt anyone to their families.
