The trial was a mockery of justice that condemned 303 people for a mass execution. Lincoln did his best by commuting sentences and pardoning most of them, but could not have prevented greater violence without allowing some of it. You have an opportunity to follow through with his initiative to unite people. You have an opportunity to validate a half century old and still growing movement to heal these old wounds and reconcile our differences.
Most of the scared and outraged settlers had no real understanding what was actually happening. They just thought they were buying land from the government. Nor did they realize how the natives were strategically manipulated to grossly unfair treaties, and then starved by violating the treaty. The Indians understood yet tried their civil best first.
