The American citizenship was granted to the residents of Puerto Rico in 1917. Although we have been citizens for almost 100 years, we do not have full representation in congress and we cannot participate in presidential elections. Both, the president of the United States as well as the congress make decisions that directly affect the residents of Puerto Rico. We believe that it is fair to ask that we participate in the process of electing officials that make decisions that impact our community. Puerto Rico's economic importance to the United States can not be ignored. The island in essence pumps over 70 billion dollars into the US economy even considering the aid provided by the federal government. Puerto Rico needs proper representation and a say as far as who controls its destiny.
