On November 6 of this year, Puerto Ricans voted on a referendum that showed 959,240 out of 1,776,273 voters (54%) were against Puerto Rico's current territorial status. Another part of the referendum was on this subject of statehood. 824,106 out of 1,348,718 votes (61.10%) were in favor of Puerto Rico becoming a state.
At the moment, Puerto Ricans must pay most federal taxes, cannot vote, and have very little representation in Congress due to their territorial status.
These factors and results of the referendum should give Puerto Ricans a chance to take an official vote to determine the future of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
