Our society values hard work and personal responsibility, yet leaves nearly a fifth of the working-age population without the opportunity and dignity of a job. If we truly want to build a work society, and not a "welfare society," then let's agree, left and right, to provide full employment to every working-age able-bodied American. Lord knows there's enough work to go around, from weatherizing old buildings to converting dilapidated and abandoned housing into parks and other open public spaces. Let's reinvigorate our social contract by requiring work for public support, but also guaranteeing support for those willing to work. We have, after all, enshrined our belief in a Right to pursue happiness.
