Halt all food subsidies on unhealthy foods and increase subsidies on health promoting foods.

Created by C.E. on October 07, 2011

At present, 63% of food subsidies support meat and dairy production. 15% of subsidies support sugar, starch, oil, and alcohol production. But less than 1% of subsidies support fruit and vegetable production.

2/3's of Americans are overweight and 1/3 are obese. Our healthcare costs keep increasing but our health keeps decreasing. A bag of carrots costs $1.29 and a hamburger can be purchased for as little as $.99. Why are our tax dollars supporting the food industries that keep Americans overweight and unhealthy?

If these items were not subsidized their prices would increase making them less attractive to consumers. The decrease in land resources used to grow food to feed animals would allow for increased production of plant-based foods, thereby lowering their prices.
