The proposed Federal Assault Weapon Ban should not be reinstated because the firearms it attacks have gained no greater lethality from the cosmetic features that put them in congressional cross hairs.
According to Dianne Fienstine assault weapons have been used in 385 murders since the expiration of the original ban, this averages out to be approximately 48 murders a year. In 2011 alone there was a total of 8583 murders by firearms. Statistical analysis of this data shows that assault weapons are responsible for 0.6% of gun related firearm related homicide.
Therefor legislative and congressional action towards the banning of assault weapons is not needed. Any action to make these weapons unattainable by the American people would be a direct violation of the 2nd amendment.
