We Americans, appalled at the Boston Marathon bombing, are disturbed at the attempt of U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz to use this occasion to take away some of our civil liberties.
She has said that invesigators plan not to give a suspect for the bombing, captured in Massachusetts, his Miranda-rights warning. These Miranda rights are fundamental to protecting innocent people who are mistakenly arrested and may be confused or terrified at the time of their arrest.
We urge President Obama to direct that all criminal procedures followed with suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing case conform to the norms of regular domestic criminal procedural law.
Besides protecting our rights, this will help ensure that anyone convicted for this heinous bombing will not be released on appeal.
