This petition would allow the salary of Congress to be determined by the median household income. The median household income is the average amount a household in the United States makes yearly before taxes.
Currently, Congress votes for its own salary increases, which it does so very liberally. The current salary for a member of Congress is $174,000 per year. Meanwhile, the average household only makes $50,502 per year.
We would ask that Congress' salary be tied directly to the median household income and rise or fall as it does. This would force Congress to help increase the income for the average American if they want their own income to rise.
Members of Congress should learn to feel what it’s like to live as most Americans do.
