Research shows that a teenagers brain does not wake up technically till 10 a.m. Between after school sports, work and/or homework, the average teen does not make it to bed before 11 p.m., and the teen then has to wake up normally before 6:30 a.m. to make it to school on time. Elementary children have far less to do when it comes to sports and homework and many other activities. Teens release melatonin at a later time then younger children, which induces drowsiness. Many high schools start at an average time of 7:15 a.m. Teenagers need up to 9 and a half hours of sleep. Research has shown that even the slightest shift in start time benefits the academic achievement, truancy rate, and behavior.
