To donate blood to the red cross, donors go through a series of questions to determine their potential health risks. In the 1980's during the AIDS epidemic gay males were banned from donating blood because of their high risk and the inaccuracy of HIV/AIDS blood testing.
Today HIV/AIDS testing is extremely accurate. All blood donations go through a series of tests including one for HIV/AIDS. Today we know that AIDS is not just a disease that effects gay men. The screening questions: "have you ever had sex with someone with HIV/AIDS" and "have you ever shared needles" should be enough to determine the risk of individuals.
The Red Cross should not be turning away healthy blood donors because of their sexual orientation.
