Current FDA regulation restricts men who have had sexual contact with other men (MSMs) since 1977 from donating blood. This ban was implemented before HIV testing was perfected, and as an emergency response to to stop the contamination of the blood reserve. Today, all blood is screened for HIV, and HIV negative men who are in a monogamous relationship are low to no risk of catching and spreading HIV.
The complete ban on MSMs should be removed and focused towards those who engage in anonymous or un-safe sexual practices (with any gender,) thus allowing willing homosexual males to participate in blood donation again.
A man who wants to give his blood to save the life of a person he has never met should not be forbidden to do so based on out-dated regulations from 30 years ago.
