The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied recovery assistance to housing cooperatives struck by storms, including Sandy, because the Agency doesn’t recognize cooperatives as residential housing.
The guidelines behind who receives FEMA aid are dictated by the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act. The Stafford Act does not contain specific provisions for co-ops or condos. As a result, FEMA considers them commercial entities or business associations, leaving them ineligible for grants of assistance to homeowners.
According to FEMA, no housing cooperative would receive assistance after any natural disaster.
This is unacceptable because they are homeowners. Let your government know that by signing this petition.
