Governor Piyush "Bobby" Jindal recently signed Louisiana Senate Bill 469 into law. Although this bill was passed through the legislature, it represents a serious breach of the rights of a portion of Louisiana's citizens when it comes to our legal rights to sue oil companies through our elected officials and those nominated to Levee Protection boards.
This bill makes it possible for only high ranking government officials to bring legal action against these oil companies when our coast, environment, and livelihoods are affected. This is wrong. The people wanted to sue 99 oil companies through our Levee Protection board and since the governor didn't want us to be able to save our wetlands for fear of oil company reprisals he aided in pushing this heinous bill through our state legislature.
