The colonization of America marked the birth of our nation. While students are educated of this process, I think we should have a day to commend those who were pushed out of this country, more specifically the Native Americans.
I think this should be a day such as Leif Erickson day, in which time off from school is debatable, but students should be encouraged to acknowledge the pain and suffering the Native Americans went through.
One of the most notable events of this happening was the Trail of Tears, which marks one of our lowest points in history. Many lives were lost that day, and they were being sent to less than pleasent reserves, and its only right that we honor those losses.
This day should be either May 16th, when the Trail of Tears begun, or June 1st when it supposedly ended.
