As educators, South Carolinians, and citizens who worry about the frequently forgotten past, we ask that one of President Obama's final acts be the naming of a National Monument (already submitted to the National Park Service for approval) to encompass key sites of emancipation and postwar community-building. The effort has bipartisan support from South Carolina's US House and Senate members, and vast support from the historians and educators, including the American Historical Association. While South Carolina still has many significant plantations and similar physical reminders of its antebellum past, Reconstruction is rarely known or marked. Let's complete the narrative and celebrate figures like Robert Smalls as the best of our story.
