The 'Great Recession' left a tremendous hole in our nation's job market, and it's going to take longer than anyone first thought to dig ourselves out.
Today, 14 million Americans are looking for work, but only three million job openings are available to them.
Two million Americans (and possibly millions more) have lost access to the financial lifeline of unemployment insurance. These men and women, the 99ers, have exhausted state and emergency benefits without being able to return to work.
The odds are against them, and in many cases, their financial resources are depleted. Their numbers are growing.
H. R. 589 would extend unemployment benefits for an additional 14 weeks, and could make the difference between work and poverty.
