Tubman is the only all girls public school in the state of Oregon, with a focus on math, science and engineering. On April 2nd the school district recommended closing it because of its low enrollment. The school board decides on April 23rd. We believe this decision is being rushed into without input from the community, and needs to be stopped. Tubman is a new school; it is only four and a half years old. Lack of awareness and repeated threats of closure have kept its enrollment low. It is bridging gaps between boys and girls in math and science. It is racially and economically very diverse with about half of its population minority and 70% low income. It has the potential to fill the huge need for technically skilled women, especially women of color in this city if it is kept open.
