The House just passed the Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act; is heading to the Senate. This bill allows Amtrak riders to take their cats and dogs, in carriers, on trains, with one car designated for the animals. This is a wonderful first step, but it is not sufficient for cat-owners that need to travel longer distances.
This is to request that the bill be modified to designate at least one or two "Roomettes" (at a premium) on each pet car, for cat owners to have a private space for litter box usage. Dog-owers may go out for a walk at stops, but cat-owers do not have this luxury. Cats need access to a private space.
This small tweak to the bill will increase revenue for Amtrak -- in addition to the pet fee, cat-owners will opt to book roomettes instead of less-expensive seats.
