Millions of kids in America are still starving, despite Congress' efforts to help them with free or reduced price lunch.
Impoverished children are put at a disadvantage already with a lack of resources and often times, a lack of support. Something as basic and necessary as food should not be an obstacle in their climb to the top.
The U.S. must act to put in place a food assistance program for children that actually works. Instead of just free or reduced-price lunch each day, students in need should be given another meal as well, this one to take home with them. Before breaks, students should also be given meals that will carry them through their time off.
Uncertainty over food is something that plagues millions of children, when it should be the least of their worries.
