Tinnitus is the most common service-related disability suffered by military personnel returning from the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Chronic tinnitus, or permanent “ringing in the ears,” often accompanies hearing loss and can be a debilitating condition. Tinnitus is most often the result of extreme noise exposure from explosions or the accumulation of noise exposure.
Tinnitus also affects millions of senior citizens with age-related hearing loss in the U.S.
H.R. 4327: Tinnitus Research and Treatment Act of 2012 directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to recognize tinnitus as a mandatory condition for research and treatment by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for other purposes.
