These people are being oppressed and forced into poverty and absolute obedience. In Orwell's 1984, he described a society much like N. K's, where everyone is being watched and anyone who even looks like they're going to rebel gets shut down. Everything the gov. does is to keep themselves in power. A main point from the book is about how uneducated people are less likely to rebel because they are content and they don't know a better lifestyle. They are too unintelligent to imagine a better society or to even begin to plan how to overthrow the government and the society works even though most of the population is this labor-overriden, unintelligent, poverty-sticken people called "proles." There are even giant posters of the ruler's face everywhere. There aren't enough characters to describe.
