“IF I WERE AN ILLEGAL ALIEN”
If I were an illegal alien
I would be very happy indeed.
I would get a free public education
It would be quite wonderful to be me.
If I were an illegal alien
I would have the Superintendent of Schools by my side on TV.
He would threaten to stop I.C.E. from deporting me – “Over my dead body”, he would say.
I would get elected officials to go to Congress to fight for me to stay,
Even though I cannot vote, and no taxes did I ever pay.
If I were an illegal alien, how powerful I would be,
Because I could bully the President of the United States to sign a bill,
That would keep me in America much longer still.
But I am a law-abiding U.S. citizen and battered teacher.
I get no workers' compensation benefits and I lost everything as a crime victim. I GET NOTHING!
