I am almost 40 years old and I am a bus driver. I make about $16,000 year however I only bring home about half of my monthly gross amount of $1400. Although I can barely pay rent every month and I go to bed hungry way more than what I care to admit, the Office of Family Support says that I make too much money to receive food stamp benefits. I think it is ridiculous that I am trying to work and take care of myself but it is hard living in poverty and not being eligible for government benefits. What sense does it make to use my gross pay anyway I never see 1/2 of that, ever so why am I penalized for it? It is so unfair because if I did not work I would get more food stamps than what i know to do with them every month. If I kept on spitting out unwanted babies I would get even more.
