The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is asking the White House to help America break its deadly meat habit. The first step is for the president-elect to require the Secretary of Agriculture and the Secretary of Health and Human Services to commit to helping the United States reduce meat production and consumption. These two cabinet positions help determine what foods end up on U.S. plates through the Farm Bill, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and other federal food programs. Right now, the average American eats 198.51 pounds of meat a year and not enough fruits and vegetables. Reducing U.S. meat production and consumption would benefit the health of humans, the environment, and animals.
