This petition asks the administration to sponsor legislation that would reduce the amount of unwanted "junk" mail in our postal system.
Postal law should be changed to require anyone who sends unsolicited mailings to:
1) Prepay return postage for the entire original mailing, and
2) clearly mark an area on the mailing where a consumer can indicate to the postal worker that they want the unsolicited item returned to the sender.
While junk mail can serve a purpose, for the most part, people dont ask for it, and dont want it. When these materials reach consumers, they are typically either thrown away (adding garbage to our landfills), or recycled at the consumers expense.
This would make marketers pay their fair share for the cost of any unwanted materials.
