We petition the United States government to step in and rescue an American icon from destruction. The S.S. United States, the ultimate American passenger flagship lies at dock in Philadelphia awaiting its fate. Will that fate be survival and resuscitation into a historic maritime showplace or a trip to the breakers yard. This ship built in 1952 was the pride of our nation, built partly with government funding; an award winning and celebrated transportation achievement not matched since. It would be a shame to let this symbol of American skill and pride vanish from our history. Specifically we request an immediate Historic Preservation designation and funding for maintenance and restoration.
