Hundreds of thousands of people rely on Virunga National Park for their food and water. And many species call it home. Some animals, like the okapi, are found nowhere else outside the Democratic Republic of Congo. Hundreds of hippos live around the lake, and the park also plays host to little-known species like the Ugandan kob, a type of antelope. It’s the only protected area with three species of great ape – eastern chimpanzees, eastern lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas. Although Virunga National Park’s pristine wilderness has been granted protections under Congolese and international law, companies from Europe and elsewhere are pursing plans for oil extraction in and around the park. We only have one earth. There is no Mark 2. Please help save Virunga.
