There is an extreme dearth of mental health help for Military Veterans, and a very high rate of veteran suicide. Increasing the supply of working mental health professionals may also decrease gun violence. Many mental health professionals are unemployed due to state budget cuts.
The United States may someday have a weak military if people who serve can’t get the mental health care they need, while people trained to help them can’t work.
The following ideas can solve the problems of inadequate mental health care for veterans, and others:
1. Allow all licensed mental health professionals to start their own practices.
2. Pass a Telehealth law permitting all licensed mental health professionals to treat patients throughout the U.S.
3. Provide more preventive measures for mental problems.
