Since before Somalia, soldiers have been issues different forms of medication to battle malaria. Soldiers were commonly issued "Doxy" (the pill you take daily) or Mefloquine (the pill you took weekly). Unfortunately, the soldiers did not know that there were long term issues which could result from taking these drugs. Mefloquine (Lariam) toxicity has been known by the United States Government to cause side effects which are similar to PTSD and TBI combined. It is also known that these drugs cause issues with the base of the brain and spinal cord. Please help the VA understand that just by taking these drugs, soldiers may sustain irreversible damage which is being misdiagnosed as either PTSD, TBI, or even both. These symptoms may also appear some time after the soldier returns home.
