Research led by Brown University professor Mary Clarksadon melatonin is a biological chemical that helps us to fall asleep is released in the adolescent brain later at night (around 10:30pm-11:00pm) making it harder for teens to go to bed early and wake up in time for school.
The National Sleep Foundation says the recommended amount of sleep teens need is between 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night. According to the CDC’s 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 69% of US high school students get less than 8 hours of sleep and 40% get 6 or less.A 3 year study by Dr. Kyla Wahlstrom at the University of Minnesota changed the start time from 7:45am-8:30am am school administrators said that there was an increased enrollment rates, increased attendance, graduation rates and standardized test scores.
