I see congress is mulling raising the gas tax to close the deficit in the highway trust fund, especially since gas prices half are down 50% or more. I agree the deficit must be closed and spending on infrastructure must continue.
Institute a tariff on foreign oil that costs less that $75 a barrel. Any barrel that is less than $75 shall have a tariff that raises the cost of the barrel to cost $75. This would keep gas prices around 2.75 a gallon or so. The money from this tarot will be deposited into the highway trust fund.
Currently this would raise about $35 per barrel imported. We import about 9.9 million barrels PER DAY.
9.9 million times $35 is $34.65 million PER DAY!
