The creation of a congressional fact checker would be a step in the right direction for the U.S. Congress.
When congresspeople make claims on the floor of the Senate or the House, they are allowed to claim whatever they want. With the creation of a congressional fact checker, any congressperson who made a claim that cited a study, report, article etc., would be fact checked before they could continue speaking.
A statement like this, by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL): "Under Obamacare, "75 percent of small businesses now say they are going to be forced to either fire workers or cut their hours," would be fact checked, where then the fact checker could inform congress that, in fact, the "study he cites suggests less than 10 percent".
