Every public school needs to be staffed with a School Safety Officer. More than a security guard, this person needs to be a fully trained police officer, with the power of the law behind him/her to detain, arrest, or take forcible action if threats arise. Their existence would let everyone in the world know that we value our schools and our children and that these will be protected at all costs. The School Safety Officer would be the key in the Crisis Command Center, responsible for communicating with local law enforcement and implementing and training teachers on crisis plans. They could be responsible for evaluating and maintaining security protocols and also be involved with matters relating to harassment, intimidation, and bullying. Consider automatic voluntary deductions for funding.
