It's not acceptable for the media to sit on advance knowledge of a crime. Their status as journalists doesn't exempt them from basic responsibilities as law abiding citizens. People in positions of influence, such as media, should be held to an ethical operation standard. The recent events, like the Gyrocopter landing on the white house lawn, are an example of journalism seeking reward for not releasing information that a crime was going to be committed.
The Tampa Bay Times was informed that it was going to happen. They had a responsibility, just like any average Joe would, to inform the authorities of this illegal action. Nobody got hurt in this incident, but what if they did? What if he had bombs strapped to the copter?
