Hold The Line on the Fiscal Cliff! NO Deal is Better than a BAD Deal

Created by T.C. on December 05, 2012

Negotiating 101 teaches us that you won't get it if you don't ask for it and if you ask for it, you just might get it.

If you want them to compromise, you have to give them an offer that they absolutely can't stomach, something they will give up their principles to avoid.

You have to open with the moon and settle for a little less.

My favorite and most effective negotiator was a character on the TV show Green Acres played by Eva Gabor. Have your staff look it up, it is impressive.

Rather than asking for 1.6 trillion in new revenue, over 10 years, modify your offer by increasing it to 6 trillion over 10 years.

Watch them squirm at that.

A high starting position gives you some negotiating room.

Whatever you do, don't start negotiating with yourself. You would lose.
