On February 24, 2014, Uganda's President Museveni signed into effect a new law which imposes life imprisonment for the "crime" of repeated gay sex between consenting adults and 14 year prison terms for "first-time offenders".
This law is a gross violation of human rights and a terrible crime against humanity.
Crimes against Humanity includes the systematic imprisonment of a civilian population and the persecution of an identifiable group.
The United States cannot simply stand by and allow this atrocity to unfold; it has a duty to protect those who are powerless and cannot protect themselves. It must act, such as denying economic aid and/or imposing targeted sanctions, to make it clear to the Uganda government that this course of action is unacceptable.
