The airline industry is an integral part of our nation's economic infrastructure. However, it is controlled by a small number of corporations that are driven to maximize profit regardless of their impact on the economy or individuals. Airlines currently cancel flights if they are not profitable and regularly overbook flights. While this maximizes profitability, it has very real effects on the efficiency of our economy in terms of lost working hours for affected individuals. The costs to individuals and to the economy at large is never accounted for in their calculations. In order to discourage corporate policy that adversely affects the economy in such a big way we suggest a system of mandatory fines that airlines must pay to customers of canceled and overbooked flights.
