I would like to propose needed changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 that will bring Safety and Empowerment to Persons with Disabilities. In short: ENFORCEMENT.
In 2011, I learnt an important facet of the ADA: shower chairs MUST be bolted and secured in Title III Transient Lodging (hotels, motels, etc). I discovered this too late: because of a small, unsecured shower-chair, I fell in a washroom in a MD Marriott Springhill Suites and fractured my cervical spine. In short…because I'm in a wheelchair. I broke my neck in a DC-area hotel room because of ADA violations. My rights were violated...and as a result, I needed full reconstructive surgery.
There was--and has been--NO enforcement.
It’s time our rights were ACTUALLY enforced…especially in our "Homes Away from Home"!
